Mentoring

The BSA offers mentoring and buddy-style support to all trainees. A trained mentor (either a consultant or senior registrar) can help you work out how best to approach an opportunity, concern or a dilemma, using the “skilled helper” model developed by Egan et al. Mentoring allows you to consider new perspectives and weigh up options to help establish a way forward, rather than trying to fix things or tell you what to do.

The mentoring conversation can be about almost anything such as guiding career decisions and /or addressing work-life balance.  It can be particularly useful at a time of change, and although there are limitations to the scope of mentoring (our mentors are not counsellors), the mentor can help you work out what support you might need.

The sessions are informal, and can last a few minutes or longer, and can be regular sessions or just a one off meeting.

If you would like to take up the opportunity to sign up for a mentoring session please email the form below to mentoringbsa@gmail.com and we will get back to you as soon as possible. You can also request a mentor through the AAGBI Mentoring scheme: https://anaesthetists.org/Home/Wellbeing-support/Mentoring

If you have any questions or would like more information about the mentoring scheme, or simply would like a senior trainee as a buddy to provide you with informal support and/or advice about how best to navigate training in the Birmingham School of Anaesthesia, please don’t hesitate to contact us directly.
