Worcestershire Acute Hospitals Trust (WAHT)

 

WAHT is a split site trust with 3 different sites - Worcestershire Royal Hospital (WRH), Kidderminster Treatment Centre (KTC), and Alexandra Hospital (Alex) in Redditch, with WRH being the largest site. Most out-of-hours work is at WRH, but there is also some OOH at Redditch.

 

You will work at all 3 sites, sometimes (depending on modules) you may even work at all 3 sites in one week. Public transport between sites is difficult and so you will need your own transport.

 

Resident anaesthetic trainees work a 1 in 8 on-call rota across 5 tiers:

  1. WRH theatre anaesthetist - post IAC resident
  2. WRH obstetric anaesthetist - post IACOA resident
  3. WRH ICU resident  - post primary FRCA and completed stage 1 ICU
  4. Alex ICU resident - post primary FRCA and completed stage 1 ICU
  5. WRH senior registrar - post final FRCA

Worcestershire Royal Hospital

Worcestershire Royal Hospital is a PFI building opened in 2002. There are 40 consultants in the department. It provides experience of all specialties with the exception of cardiac and neuro anaestheisa. Vascular and ENT/ head and neck/ airway modules are extremely popular offering excellent training opportunities. The colorectal unit is the 4th busiest in the country with patients undergoing complex laparoscopic operations not seen in other hospitals such as TATMEs and ELAPS. 

 

There is a high degree of trainee supervision and comprehensive exam-orientated teaching. The department has good computer access and IT support.

There are opportunities to do paediatric and adult daycase at purpose-built Treatment Centre in Kidderminster. 

 

Alexandra Hospital

 

The Alexandra Hospital in Redditch was opened in 1985. It serves a population of approximately 200,000 and has over 300 beds.

 

The hospital is the major centre for the county’s urology service. The hospital has eight operating theatres, MRI and CT scanners and cancer unit status for breast, lung, urology, gynaecology and colorectal cancers.
