Dr Jim Brunning

Jim graduated from University College London in 2002, before working in South America as an expedition medic.  He started his anaesthetic training in 2005 at Russells Hall Hospital, followed by registrar training in the Birmingham School of Anaesthesia. During his training he worked at all the Hospitals in the School. 

Jim was appointed to a Consultant post at Russells Hall Hospital in 2012, where he was an educational supervisor, ran trainee teaching, pre-operative assessment service and the staff tuck shop! He joined the Royal Orthopaedic Hospital (ROH) as a Consultant in 2018. 

Jim’s clinical interests include orthopaedics and perioperative medicine. Out of work he enjoys: baking, boxing, skiing, running and walking his Bernese Mountain dogs. He was one of the founders of the BASDART airway course and has run and taught on numerous FRCA SOE/OSCE courses throughout his career. He also runs twice yearly wellbeing conferences for doctors and has an interest in clinical hypnosis.

The atmosphere at the ROH is very relaxed and friendly, with world class surgeons and lots of opportunities to perform regional blocks and complete management projects. The rota at the ROH is hugely flexible and a great option for trainees in need of a more relaxed pace pre or post exam. It is a low intensity rota and out of hours work is rare, allowing you some decompression time away from busy ITU, delivery suites and stresses of the Emergency Department.
